Teho Teardo and Blixa Bargeld

Recently I was approached by the lovely folks over at Opera North to cover a few shows for them. This was a cool opportunity for me to try something different - get myself out of my comfort zone, so to speak.

The first show I was down to cover was something very eclectic - Teho Teardo and Blixa Bargeld performing their album 'Still Smiling' as part of the Recon Festival. For those not familiar Teardo is an Italian musician/composer and Bargeld a German poet/vocalist who's past collaborations include Nick Cave. Doing some pre-gig research, it soon became apparent that together they've produced some widely respected works.

This was my first time shooting at the Howard Assembly Rooms, so got there early to scope the place out. After working out all my vantage points, I took my seat at the side of the room whilst the crowds meander in.

Given this was quite an immersive performance and a seated event, I had to be mindful of becoming a distraction. I shot most of my three song allowance from the sides of the venue to avoid obscuring anyone's view, utilising the Silent Shooting mode on the Canon 5D MarkIII.

The venue itself was pretty good to shoot - plenty of white key light and room to move - the biggest challenge was getting round to get as many shots from as many different angles as possible in 10 minutes. It was strange to not be shooting between the crowd and the stage, but it was a welcome challenge for me as I had to think of new ways of shooting.

Cheers again to the awesome folk at Opera North. You're swell :)
