Since the start of the year I've been working with Autobahn - a fantastic Leeds band signed to Tough Love Records.
I first met up with the guys back in February for a photoshoot at The Nave - an awesome new recording studio converted from a church on the outskirts of Leeds where they were adding the finishing touches to debut album Dissemble with legendary Leeds producer Matt Peel. We tried a handful of different set ups, and the spacious venue provided several different backdrops to help give the shoot some variety.
A few months later the guys got back in touch to arrange a shoot for a specific campaign for their album release shows in Leeds and London. This was a bizarre day, which involved a coffin, a hearse and some happy looking kids. This shoot presented some interesting new challenges, and certainly made a change to the usual band shoots I'm familiar to!
Prior to the album launch shows, my shots were used for the gig poster, as well as a billboard on Hyde Park Corner in Leeds:
A few weeks later, I made my way down to The Brudenell to shoot the album launch show, which was pretty special. It was great to finally see the guys play live, on the back of all the hype that they were generating. They were just phenomenal!
I headed down early to shoot the soundcheck - this was a great opportunity to get some nice reportage 'behind the scenes' shots. The guys were surprisingly relaxed, not at all fazed by the upcoming show at all. The show itself was absolutely heaving, with some notable characters from the Leeds music scene dotted around the crowd, including good friends Eagulls. It was a very tough show to shoot, with the new smoke machine at the Brud on overdrive, but I managed to come away with a handful of decent frames.
Looks like these guys are destined for big things, so keep an eye - and an ear - out.
