Had the pleasure of helping out the delightful Cruel World with some quick press shots in advance of their debut run of shows.
There were a few familiar faces from other acts I've had fortune of shooting over the past few years, including Harry from Altar Hanglands, James from Post War Glamour Girls and Lee from Middleman (without dreadlocks, which took some getting used to!).
I caught up with the guys at the iconic Cardigan Arms in Kirkstall for the shoot, where I was greeted by Cruel World's sixth member: Dougie - an adorable Cavapoochon puppy, who cameo'd in a bunch of the shots.
As with most of my shoots, I wanted the shots to look very natural with minimal posing, which the guys were into. Starting with a few basic seated groups shots infront of a large window. For this shot I just asked the guys to talk amongst themselves whilst I shot away.
We then moved on to shooting in front of a huge mirror in the same room, which has an amazing chandelier hanging in front of it. Again, I asked the gus to maintain the casual look for a few frames, before directing the guys a little more for some more formal shots.
The particular challenge with this shoot was balancing the light from the chandelier with my flash. This was quite tricky, as the light from the chandelier was quite bright, but their wasn't that much ambient light in the room. I lit the room up a little with my flashgun, but in hindsight a full light setup would have been more effective. That said, shooting into a mirror with full softboxes would have been a nightmare for finding angles.
Head over to Facebook to give Cruel World some love, and feel free to give their debut single 'Boxer' a listen here:
