What better way to end 2017 than with some Finnish glam metal?
Every now and then I'll put in to shoot a show that's a little left-field, a bit different to the other shows I've been shooting. I find this to be a great way to keep me on my toes as they can often be challenging, as well as providing opportunities to discover new acts.
Whilst perhaps not a household name, Santa Cruz is a well established glam metal band from Helsinki with clear influences from the likes of Guns 'N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC et al, who have honed their sound and live show over the past ten years. I caught the guys towards the end of their UK tour, stopping off at the 'cosy' Manchester Academy 3.
I've not shot much in the way of metal this year - especially having missed Leeds festival - so opportunities to capture bullhorns, monitor lunges and exuberant guitar solos had been minimal. Santa Cruz more than compensated for this, with plenty of solos from frontman Archie and lead guitarist Johnny in our three song allocation. Drummer Taz and Bassist Middy ticked the box for hair flinging, although a lack of light on those guys made capturing it pretty tricky.
Huge thanks to Santa Cruz for having me along to shoot the show, and whetting my appetite to shoot a bit more metal next year.
