Thrilled to be commissioned to shoot such an awesome event - an emotional day of live music in a truly stunning setting.
Halifax has undergone a significant resurgence in recent years. I grew up in a neighbouring mill town, and have fond - yet slightly faded - memories of many nights out in some of Halifax's questionable night spots. It was always great, but rarely glamorous. However, like many northern towns, it was all too evident how much Halifax suffered in the wake of the financial crash in 2008. If has been a long recovery, but for Halifax it appears that a corner has been turned and the town is thriving again, symbolised in the return to prosperity of the iconic Piece Hall - a huge, 18th century courtyard building, which was originally used for trading cloth 'pieces'.
I'd only ever visited the Piece Hall one before, long before it's restoration in 2017. I have vague memories from the mid-late 90s of visiting with my mother when I was perhaps 12 or 13. Safe to say, it's in a much better place now: I visited again a few months ago to scope the place out, and it has everything I love - a record shop, coffee shops, gin bars. It's amazing!
I was hugely excited to shoot the show. As well as the stunning venue, the lineup was equally as impressive. Local heroes The Orielles getting the day underway, followed by Hookworms and Edwyn Collins, before Father John Misty brought the day to a close.
Frightened Rabbit were also due to play, and there were several tributes to Scott Hutchison throughout the day. MJ of hookworms read a particularly poignant dedication, and later in the day Nathan Clark from The Brudenell Social Club led a touching tribute to Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit who were also due to play, with a minutes applause followed and two tracks from two of Scott's bands - "The Loneliness and The Scream" by Frightened Rabbit, and "Old Team" by Mastersystem. On a personal level, this was possibly the toughest thing I've ever had to shoot, but it was great to be able to join in the celebration of Scott's life.
Such a great day, and so proud to have been involved. Hopefully this is the start of many, many great things at the Piece Hall.
