Got to hang with my ol' buddies The Human Project to shoot some press shots for their next album, Clarion Call.
Had the pleasure of working with these guys on quite a lot over the years. Our first shoot was way back in 2010, when I met the guys at an abandoned school in Bradford that was being repurposed as a stinking crack den. Good times! This was due to be our first shoot with Matt, who'd replaced the recently-emigrated Dan on drums.
I met the guys at The Nave recording studio in Leeds, where they were adding the finishing touches to the album with producer Andy Hawkins. The Nave is an awesome space - a former church that's been beautifully converted into a comprehensive recording studio, the main feature of which being the huge main room. I had visited The Nave once before, when I did my first shoot with Autobahn back in 2015, and it's become a staple backdrop to many a Leeds bands promo and documentary photos. Conscious of this, I was keen to make sure that the shots we got weren't too formulaic, and that the venue wasn't as too easily identifiable.
I set up my lighting gear in the main room. We cleared a space in the centre of the room, but left a few artefacts around so it still had a bit of a studio feel. Sometimes it's right to totally clear a space so the only thing in shot is the subject, but sometimes keeping a few bits in the periphery of a shot can help add that extra level of interest. I opted for a simple two light set up, mainly as we didn't have a lot of time. The guys had two album launch gigs coming up, and were yet to practice with their new drummer. I set up one key light in a large octagonal softbox 45° to the side of the band, with a second light directly opposite with a coloured gel. I like to add a bit of colour to the shots where I can, as it can add a bit more interest. I opted for a red Gel, as it fit in quite well with the large red brick wall behind the band.
We ran through a bunch of simple group and individual poses, which was easy enough. The guys had been through this process plenty of times before, and are fine coming up with some kind of goofy idea for a pose - Matt particularly excelled at this. All in all, a great evenings work.
The Human Project are currently enjoying their first tour in Japan - give them some love on Facebook to keep up with their exploits, as well as links to download/stream Clarion Call.
In a band? Need some press shots? I'm always on the lookout for new acts to work with. If you fancy a shoot, hit me up.
