Litany editorial shoot

Litany are an awesome duo from Harrogate who first came to my attention about a year ago when I was driving home from a shoot and heard Huw Stephens spinning one of their tracks on BBC Introducing.

We met up with Beth and Jake at their studio just outside Harrogate on a wet winter's evening to shoot a feature for Counterfeit magazine. I had two ideas in mind for the shoot, the first being a studio-style setup using coloured gels. We found a big empty space in one of the vacant rooms adjacent to the guys studio, and set up a three light arrangement, mixing a softened main light with blue and cyan gels either side.

The second set up had a more of an early-90s raw feel to it. Using just a single bare light shot almost straight on to get some really strong shadows - a style that is very much on trend at the minute. We found a big roller-door to use as a suitable backdrop. It gave the shots a bit of character, a slight grunge edge, and the reflection on the wall helped with the impulsive feel.

Had a great time with Beth and Jake - we clicked straight away, which made the shoot so much easier. Genuine great couple of folk who offered great banter and great tea. Hopefully I'll get the chance to work with the guys again in the future.

Thanks as always to my awesome assistant Fern, too.

Check out Litany's Facebook page for details about shows and releases, or head over to Counterfeit to read the feature.
